Understanding MLD and CDT

MLD is one component of lymphatic care. Complete Decongestive Therapy is a broader management approach incorporating several components according to individual need.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

MLD is a specialized gentle manual technique that supports lymphatic fluid movement. It uses light, rhythmic strokes to stimulate the lymphatic vessels and encourage drainage. MLD may be used on its own or as part of a broader CDT program.

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)

CDT is a comprehensive, multi-component approach recognized internationally as the gold standard for lymphedema management. It incorporates MLD alongside other components tailored to the individual's presentation and goals.

A Comprehensive Approach to Lymphedema Management

Recognized internationally as the gold standard approach for lymphedema management
CDT incorporates several components, selected and combined according to each individual's clinical presentation and needs

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Specialized gentle manual techniques supporting lymphatic fluid movement. MLD uses light, rhythmic strokes to stimulate lymphatic vessels and encourage drainage of accumulated fluid.

Compression Therapy

Bandaging, wraps, and/or appropriately fitted compression garments to help prevent fluid re-accumulation and support ongoing swelling reduction between sessions.

Skin Care

Education intended to support skin integrity and reduce infection risk — an important component of long-term lymphedema management.

Therapeutic Movement

Appropriate movement and exercise to support muscle pumping, lymphatic circulation, mobility, and function — tailored to individual capacity and goals.

Education & Self-Management

Helping patients understand ongoing compression use, skin care, and strategies for long-term self-management to maintain treatment outcomes.

Garment Measurement & Fitting

Measurement and fitting of appropriate ready-to-wear or custom compression garments as part of the ongoing management plan.
